Avicii - Bromance is here to stay

Swedish wunderkind Tim Berg, more known as Avicii is about to drop a huuuge bomb. Perhaps the song of the summer 2010 if SHM's untitled track below wont do it?

Enjoy this beautiful beast:

New track from Swedish House Mafia!

Finally the boys from SHM are releasing their next track. No official name has been announced (or even that it's them who actually produced it) but numerous sources tell us that this indeed is their upcoming track. At first I didn't like it all, but it has grown on me and by now I might just adore it.

No name or release date yet, but here is a preview of it from their gig in New York:
(You might want to skip the entoxicated monolouge from Steve Angello during the first minute and 40 seconds)

The Digital DJ#1 - Some History

This is my shot at trying to explain how digital DJ:ing works, what the different setups could be and some help in helping you choose the gear you need. But first it's time for some analog DJ history:

During the early ages of radio broadcasting at the beginning of the 20th century the first "DJ" appeared - 16 year old Ray Newby of Stocktown, Califronia. He started out playing really, really old school vinyl using a spark transmitter at the Herrold College of Engineering and Wireless with some help of the radio pioneer Charles "Doc" Herrold.

Ray Newby: We used popular records at that time, mainly Caruso records, because they were very good and loud; we needed a boost. We started on an experimental basis and then, because this is novel, we stayed on schedule continually without leaving the air at any time from that time on except for a very short time during WW I...

Radio stations began appearing all over the US and at 1927 it reached europe featuring BBC's radio show host Christopher Stone. In 1935 the term "Disc Jockey" was introduced by the commentator Walter Winchell describing Martin Block and what was later to become the show "Make Believe Ballroom" where Martin created an illusion of actually broadcasting from inside a ballroom where all the top dance bands were preforming live - using samples, ambient noises and block played music. In the magazine Variety the term "Disc Jockey" was printed for the first time 1941.

This is of course far from what we expect from a DJ today, but in 1943 the first "dance party" DJ arrived in Jimmy Savile who broadcasted jazz music in the upstairs function room of the Loyal Order of Ancient Shepherds in Otley, England. In 1947 he started using dual turn tables for continuous play and during the same time what is considered the world's first nightclub opened in Paris - Whiskey à Go-Go. Back in the US the dual turn table system was introduced and widely spread during the 1950's by the american DJ Bob Casey. It was also during this time that the payola scandal unfolded in the US (when a record label pays a DJ/Radio station to play their songs during airtime without letting the audience know that it actually is a paid advertisement). Part of the fallout of the payola scandal helped form the infamous Top 40 system where radio stations and DJ's only play the most popular and best selling records at the moment.

During the late 1950's a new phenomenon appeared in the streets of Kingston, Jamacia. Promoters who called themselves DJ's organized big parties with huge speakers where the focus of the party was the disc jockey that was called the "selector" (who played dance music continuously through the night). It was a giant success and a fierce competition started between the promoters as to who could mass the largest parties and play the newest music. The following decade the nightclubs and discotheques began popping up all over the world and the first pieces of specialized DJ gear appeared. A few years later, in 1969, the modern DJ technique called beatmatching and slip-cueing was popularized for the first time by the american DJ Francis Gasso at the New York nightclub "Sanctuary". A couple of years later the american DJ Kool Herc started what was to later develop into turntablism by playing the same track on two turntables and mixing the breaks with each other in order to extend them and/or create new rhythmical patterns using hip-hop music. This is what could be considered to be the start of modern DJ'ing as it's preformed today.

Image

In 1974 the firts piece of "modern" DJ equipment was released: the Technics SL-1200 which still today is the standard choice of turntable for basically all night clubs and most DJ's. The following year mr Theodore Livingston, more known as "Grandmaster Flash" invented the technique of scratching and released the first Hip-Hop mega hit "Rapper's Delight". The only tool of choice for the working DJ during the 1980's and early 1990's was essentially the turntable, and most likely the Technics SL-1200. There were some attempts to produce CD players with the same functionality and reliability as a turntable but it took until 1993 before the first widely accepted and reliable DJ CD was released: the Denon 2000f.

Image

It could however not produce scratching sounds like a turntable could which resulted in many DJ's hanging on to turntables for the right "feeling" and ability to scratch while DJ'ing. All the way in to the late 1990's, early 2000's the majority of the big name DJ's were still using the Technics SL-1200 turntable, released for the first time in 1974.
In the early 2000's the first CD player with the ability to create a realistic scratch sound using digital algorithms was unleashed upon the market: the CDJ-1000 by Pioneer which was to beomce the king of the throne, slowly replacing the SL-1200 for most DJ's.

Image

At the same time the first software DJ applications was released, such as: Traktor DJ Studio, AtomixMP3 et.c. It was during this period that the foundation for the digital DJ was forged - DJ's was not bound to hardware components for live sound manipulation any longer. The CDJ-1000 took the world by storm and became the new club standard next to the Technics SL-1200 for the turntable enthusiasts. The software applications for DJ'ing released during these early years of 2000's would later become the giants of today, but at this time they were not suitable for live use due to bad sound quality and unstable operation. It took yet a couple of years before Traktor, Serato and all the others had the reliability that was required and even though there still are debate over whether they are stable enough for live use, many big name DJ's rely on them on a regular basis.

Long weekend...

Was away on leisure over the weekend, and I'm finally back home. Feels good.
Implemented support for manufacturer weblinks in the MIDI-base - felt good too (and by that, not claiming that the links are actually there yet). Also added a new manufacturer/midi-controller to the database - Kenton from the UK with their Killamix Mini.

New mashup coming up asweel, hopefully there will be a mashup aswell as weblinks for all midi devices tomorrow.

MegaMan 2 On Piano

Found this adorable clip of the crazy, dorky and very talented Torley preforming his interpretation of the old tune from the NES game MegaMan 2 - Dr Wily Theme. Simply amazing if you ask me, and perhaps a bit of a stretch posting it here on digitaldj. Anyways, here it is:

Maskinen finally releases it's album

Image Image Image
It's been almost two years since the swedish rap-duo released it's first single "Alla som inte dansar är våldtäktsmän" - Everyone who's not dancing is a rapist. Strange swedish humor for some people, but it was a mega hit in scandinavia, followd by the singles "Segertåget / Pengar - "Victory Train / Money". Now the time has come for them to release their album "Boyz II Men" together with well known swedish electro producer Style Of Eye. It's an electro-packed album with lots of latino influences well worth checking out for anyone that likes the digitized future of music. Here's their new single "Dansa Med Vapen"/"Dance With Weapons" for your enjoyment:
